01The letter of admission

After you pass the entrance exam, you receive a letter of admission (Zulassungsbescheid) from the Studienkolleg or via uni-assist. It states your course, the start of the semester and the deadline by which you must accept your place.

Accept your place on time – otherwise it goes to the waiting list.

02Apply for a visa

Citizens of non-EU countries need a national visa for study purposes (Section 16b of the German Residence Act, AufenthG). Apply for it at the German embassy or consulate in your country.

  • Health insurance for entry
  • Valid passport and biometric photo

03Open a blocked account

For the visa you have to prove that you can cover your living costs. In 2026 that is €11,904 for one year, with €992 released each month.

Allow two to three weeks for opening the account – without the confirmation you won’t get a visa appointment.

04Arrival and enrolment

After arriving, you enrol at the Studienkolleg, register your address at the citizens’ office (Bürgeramt) and apply for your residence permit at the immigration office (Ausländerbehörde).

Bring all the originals of the documents you submitted as copies with your application.

05What if it doesn’t work out?

If your visa is refused or delayed, inform the Studienkolleg immediately. Many colleges can move your place to the next semester.

06Requirements

  • School Qualification: Foreign school leaving certificate with university entrance qualification in home country
  • German Language Skills: Minimum B1 level of the Common European Framework
  • Entrance Examination: Successful participation in the entrance examination
  • Visa: Valid student visa for Germany
